Editing Documents Offline !!

It will be possible to edit & comment on Documents offline from July 24th with a number of caveats;-
  1. you must be running the latest version of Chrome or ChromeOS and install the Google Drive Chrome app to edit offline.
  2. Offline editing is only available for Google documents at this time. It is not yet available for Google spreadsheets or presentations.

There is a sequence of steps to be followed;-

1. Allow offline access for your computer

see http://support.google.com/docs/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1628469

2. Sync items to view offline
see

http://support.google.com/docs/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1628512

Tip: use offline editing just for documents that you own since any modifications made by the Document Owner have precedence !!

Google launches Drive

Google Drive
  • Create and collaborate.
  • Store everything safely and access it anywhere (especially while on the go).
  • Search everything.
5GB of storage for free. You can choose to upgrade to 25GB for $2.49/month, 100GB for $4.99/month or even 1TB for $49.99/month. When you upgrade to a paid account, your Gmail account storage will also expand to 25GB.

See the Official launch info here

This is just the beginning, Drive is an open platform and third party developers are working on features like send faxes, edit videos and create website mockups directly from Drive.

There is significant debate going on with regard to Drive and other competing systems, e.g. Dropbox however just being able to edit files and store / access them across multiples environments is a much more attractive proposition than just synchronisation. (IMHO)
